About

The middle school life science course explores topics core to our understanding of life. Beginning with looking at how to define life, students follow an approach by which they start from fundamental units and build their way up. First, students study the organic chemistry behind life - looking at proteins, lipids, carbohydrates and nucleic acids. Next, they build on a second layer as they look at cells. Students study cellular processes, metabolism as well as how cells can reproduce through mitosis and meiosis. Next, students build on another layer of organization. Students now begin to study cell tissues which brings them to look at organs and organ systems. Students study key organ systems in the body such as the cardiovascular system, respiratory system, immune system, gastrointestinal system and more. Next, students move to the species level. Students study concepts such as species classification as well as evolution, looking at various means of evolution. Next, students progress to the ecosystem level, studying how various species interact with each other and their environment. Students study various types of environments and adaptations which species have made to thrive in these environments.
